Three maple trees in the recently-inaugurated parc Lucia-Kowaluk are going to be felled. According to Nicolas Nadeau-Thibodeau, ingénieur forestier, this action has to be taken because these trees are afflicted by severe structural defects resulting from a disease called canker, which is caused by a fungus. These weakness defects are located at the trunk and roots. The extent of these cankers and the degradation of wood caused by the development of wood decay make these trees highly vulnerable to the elements and dangerous to public safety.
These trees will be replaced as part of the Lucia Kowaluk Park redevelopment project
